| Notes |
- He was married before his marriage to Rebecca. His first wife's name is unknown but they were married, and she likely died, in Kentucky. He moved his family from Nelson county, Kentucky to Harrison County, Indiana in the early spring of 1820, probably moving early enough that he could get a crop in and some land cleared and a home built before their first winter in Indiana. His son, James, was born in December of 1819 in Nelson County, Ky. William appears in the summer 1820 Census for Harrison County, In. The move undoubtedly involved several families, Bennetts, Pittmans, McGrews, all entertwined already in Kentucky. Most emigrations were made in groups in early days. Several men working together could build homes, clear land and lend each other a hand with the primitive tools available far easier than a man working alone could do, and women had some security from the group should misfortune befall her man on the way. Sometimes a group of the men would go ahead and set up the new homesteads, then return for families. We aren't sure of the exact logistics but we do know that these families all arrive in south central Indiana from Kentucky in the same time frame, and continued to be closely allied for at least another generation.
